things that you make

Postby all monsters » Fri Sep 04, 2015 1:26 pm

if you make things share them here!

here is my first attempt at making a video game. you control the little blocky pyramid craft, try to fly through the levels without hitting the walls, getting shot or touching your enemies. gravity will pull you down but the up key will drive you back up. shoot your enemies and their bullets.

controls are as follows -

z - shoot left
x - shoot right
left key - accelerate left
right key - accelerate right
up key - accelerate up

it looks like this -

if you have game maker I think you can just grab this file and load it up. open the rooms tab and change the level order to try different levels (game maker will play whichever level is at the top of the queue). if you don't have game maker but do have a mac, I should have game maker's exporting process figured out pretty soon. I'll post something when I do.

I also make music, mostly for myself to fall asleep to. my celebrity endorsement is that the developer of spooky poo's happy halloween told me that they'd been going to sleep by it for a couple of days too. I make it with a guitar/keyboard, tube amp, toy drum kit, loop pedal and a tape deck. it's all available here: http://soundcloud.com/zebracassettes

I'll check out your game in a few days when I'm in an more stable environment, but I listened to all your music! very modern krautrock, sun araw style. enjoyable!

As for me, I write stupid articles, which barely counts, but you can see stuff like that here: www.brandonsheffield.com

I also write comics, which my friend Dami draws.

Here's one we did: http://brandonsheffield.com/no-girlfriend-comics/

Here's the one that's ongoing: hotcomics.biz

thanks, I look forward to your impressions. regarding my songs, that's a pleasing comparison, sun araw are cool! I need to make time to start playing/recording again, I turned into a dad about a year ago and completely fell out of the habit. it's difficult to justify spending free time on hobbies instead of extra work though.

I like your comics, you and dami are a good team. the art and writing are well suited each other. I notice that one of the hot comics is a lot more popular than its friends!

edit: here is a zip of the standalone version of my prototype for mac

do you find the process painful or the result? I enjoy thinking about stuff I could make and having the thing at the end but the process usually makes me feel awful.

the process is real rough, I have to force myself to write a lot of the time. and it's much, much worse when I have to do something fiddly like fill out a form while accessing an arcane site through a VPN - which is something I'm currently avoiding.

I tend to get excited about ideas I have, but then when it's time to implement them it's a bit of a slog. But you've just got to... do it! Or else it won't get done!

I find both parts equally painful and exciting. There's a certain brutality to seeing your ideas imperfectly manifest in reality. It's a bizarre sort of torture to see flaws in your own design that exist due to your inability to bring your design from idea to reality.

As for the process, you pretty much hit the nail on the head, Brandon. The fiddly bits amount to some real unpleasantness. Well, not always (I had the time of my life re-writing a bunch of python code to be way more optimized and future idea implementation friendly the other day), but usually fiddly equates to terrible. The process is what tends to hold me back. I have a bunch of little RPG battle mechanic systems that I want to build and test out - but in order to test them out I'd have to build them, and that just sounds like a mess of no fun at all.

Implementation is rough, but it's the only way to bring ideas to life.

I always want to tell people, "just go ahead and make it!" but it sure is not that easy! it's real difficult and annoying!

also allmonsters I still haven't checked out your game because it turns out I didn't install gamemaker on my new laptop :3

that's fine brandon! I won't be sad if I'm the only one who ever plays it, making it taught me a lot. I'll definitely be able to make cooler things with the techniques it's helped me figure out.

is there no quick and easy way to turn it into an exe? that would be a big limitation of a game engine I'd think!

not from the mac version! it is a very annoying limitation of this particular game engine. game maker studio for windows can export both ways, but they stopped updating game maker on mac several versions ago so we're stuck with these problems.

ohh, that makes sense. Well, that is kind of garbagey!
I wonder how much they'll continue updating the windows version now that it's been sold? I guess vlambeer is kind of their poster child, so they've still got some stuff going.

yeah, and downwell has just come out which should be a good endorsement for the platform. seems odd that they aren't kicking a little money to people like moppin and vlambeer to display a game maker logo during boot up.

as for whether they'll keep updating, the background of the company that bought it doesn't fill me with much confidence, but then yoyo weren't doing much for me and my mac anyway. I wonder if vlambeer's next thing after nuclear throne will still be game maker.

Maybe they don't have money to give up - the thing is so cheap anyway.

I also wonder whether vlambeer's next game will be game maker - it seems like they're pretty invested in and used to it, but it's not exactly the most vibrant community right now!

i just feel like if im gonna die one day whats the point of doing anything, as all things are temporary. i believe that this all exists because i do and once im gone so is everthing else. but yeah james i get ideas(good ones!)but then never run with them, due, in part, to this pattern of thought i just mentioned, any suggests, or should i just do it and deal with the ultimate pointlessness of it. i dont even know what im asking, sorry guys. lates

There's certainly an argument to be made that your universe only exists so long as you exist, but you could take that as pointless, or you could take that as a reason to make the most of the universe that exists around you. It's all about what sort of perspective you want to take on it.

oops, didn't notice their were replies to this thread. dose, for me the point is just silencing the voice that says "I wanna make something!" which I hear every time I play or listen to something I like. otherwise the fragments of ideas build up into a pile and make it difficult to focus on real things.

brandon, yeah that's probably correct regarding money. seems like vlambeer probably would stick with game maker unless they want to try something a bit bigger. the scene may not be vibrant but I doubt that makes too much difference to them.

oh hey, I don't know anyone else who would care and I kinda want to talk about it; I've been playing el viento. It's a cool, strange game. I like the weird disconnect between the vintage anime girl with boomerangs and 1920's new york, and I like the relentless blonde casey jones machete motorcyclists and apartment buildings completely filled with aggressive tenants. imagine living in one of those buildings!

I haven't seen past the first stage yet, but the level design so far is pretty cool. lots of snaking your way up and down buildings, and secret areas that are sort of only hidden by the wild pace you're encouraged to move at. I like the boomerang weapon too, although I wish you could jump over it to attack rearward enemies on the rebound.

hmm, I wonder if I have a voice that tells me to make something? I know I have a voice that says "I want to relax" but wants to do it in the most correct and enjoyable way, which in itself is stressful.

El Viento is cool and weird! Wolf Team sure was 75% of the way there all the time. It's a real tough one though, and I've only gotten to stage 3 or so, because I haven't put in the time. I should put in the time! and yeah, it'd be cool if you could super boomerang that thing to just keep it flailing around you!

You should also try the valis series, by the way!

hah, yeah I also have the problem of wanting to relax in the best way possible. I only have a small window of time at the end of the day to use for relaxing and it's pretty much at the expense of sleeping, so deciding is always agonising.

still haven't beaten that first boss in el viento, his second stage wears me down too much. I read in an interview with some wolf team dudes that they don't think the game is that hard once you learn the patterns, so I guess I just need to get tougher.

speaking of wolf team, I briefly tried out earnest evans last week, that is a super weird game. I didn't make much progress into it, but I was curious to see what it would look like played with some skill so I watched some speedruns. man, that is a fascinatingly floppy game! quite beautiful too, aside maybe from the bizarre puppet-like earnest sprite. that's kind of charming too though. also I think earnest evans should team up with serious sam.

I've been checking out the valis series a little bit, specifically pc-engine valis iii. thanks for the recommendation, it's great. aside from rondo of blood it's the only cd based game I've played from that era, it's weird playing this type of game with real voice acting and not chip music. it's a very distinct atmosphere.

I like the stage 2 (I think) waterfall boss, he's charmingly un-dangerous with his little diagonal spear poke and vertical arms-forward diving/rising attack. I really liked the progression of this stage, descending the cliff face/fighting your way up the waterfall/boss on top of the waterfall/boat ride across the lake overlooked by looming tower/fight your way up tower/boss on top of tower. I really feel that little pocket of valis' world! the way you progress deeper into the frame (from the lake fight into the tower) makes the area really believable. valis iii would make a great saturn/playstation era chunky 3D action/adventure game, it's the kind of world I wanna crawl around the edges of, finding all its weirdnesses.

Alright, it's been too long since I've posted on here. I really want to make stuff, but my skills aren't entirely there. I'm currently working through a massive Unity tutorial/course, and once I'm done with that I'll be implementing what I learned on a couple pet projects.

While I plod away at that, I've been learning my way around asm programming for the 6502 (specifically the NES, though asm for the z80 GB processor is next on my list). I've got the basics down, and bit by bit, I'm chopping together a working Zelda style engine. I've only got the basics down so far, but if you're interested in seeing the partially finished efforts of a total beginner at recreating a classic game's engine, it's worth a gander. The raw state of asm and the 6502 is great in ways I never imagined programming could be, even if it's notably less intuitive than more modern languages (no if statements, which is quite the thing. and an absurdly limited amount of variable space). If you want to pop my current efforts into an emulator, the rom is right here: http://runningfromskeletons.com/wp-cont ... engine.zip
