Videogame Music Thread

Postby Nana » Fri Jul 03, 2015 2:48 am

Show me the other coolest stuff you've got!

Sin & Punishment - Agave (Toshiya Yamanaka): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHg0tAlRUzQ

Drakengard - In The Sky 5.2 (Keiichi Okabe): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHvfvxGHBdE

Flower, Sun, and Rain - Opening (Masafumi Takada): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYjWRRs9cu0

Napple Tale - Cecil's Garden (Yoko Kanno): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwuIwe_ ... 61FC46EE90

Darius Gaiden - Visionnerz (Zuntata): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSpB6aU1Bdg

Your turn! I especially like artists who make music that you'd normally not expect to find in a game.

I was listening to Devine's soundtrack for Oquonie a week or two ago!

Tanioka's Crystal Chronicles soundtrack! They were able to do so many different things in that soundtrack. It's something that always springs to me mind!

I often get the beat of this track in my brain, it's really infectious!

I used to like this a bunch as kid because it felt like there was a lot of weight to the music. Not sure what I think about it any more!

I don't really like the new version, but I think it's interesting to see how the theme has evolved. I like the industrial glitch rip sounds, but it kind of sounds like a generic metal song I'd instantly turn off or tune out.

Killer Cuts

Postby adamazing » Sun Jul 05, 2015 11:56 pm

The music playing when you scroll through the menus of the new KI is one of the best things ever. That tune is so memorable and fun, especially if I'm controlling it. I often scroll through menus to the beat of a song anyway, so it makes perfect sense they did that. I still can't believe EVERYONE doesn't do that. It's so much dumb fun.

A while ago my friend andrew toups asked me for some links to the "dankest music in video games." So off the top of my head, and with what was available on youtube, I came up with this. Enjoy!

Crude buster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW9--pLQYOo

Midnight Resistance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7-AHModlMA

Atomic Runner Chelnov: http://vgmrips.net/packs/pack/chelnov-a ... arp-x68000
(note that the above three were all written by Azusa Hara, among the dankest of composers)

Super Valis IV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfDn5_CCQ_c
While generally I prefer the music in the PC Engine Valis games, this title screen music is fantastic.
For comparison, here is the excellent Valis III title music from the PCE version. https://youtu.be/4S1QGToV560?t=1m57s - I just wish it were mixed better!

Legendary Axe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvxAHb_gbPg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcDRQgWMFp4
Note the octave modulation to make a richer tone using the same channel - I'm not sure why more games didn't do this.

Dragon Slayer II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8onTxnlESrw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWbb6m0dHqw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frqzhEq0KpM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ywvTWEgE2k
Dragon Slayer for PCE is among the best series for video game music in my opinion, though there are only two games in the run.

If you want something goofy, give this ninja funk track from Iga Ninden Gaoh a shot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHvQNxtTZzk

The quality is low, but the intro music to Legion is the best thing about the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP1Hyx5sduE

Getting into the more 90s style sweeping tones, we have my favorite fighting game of all time, Asuka 120%: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiCJ-f7hquc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0U7vWCTk-M
The whole soundtrack is excellent.

In a similar vein, you have Thunderforce V, with one of the best shooting game tracks of all time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtlH9bprRPU

But of course when it comes to shooters, one can't ignore Battle Garegga. https://www.youtube.com/watch

There's plenty more excellent video game music out there in this general vein, and I could go on forever - but why not finish off mellowing out to this Ryu Umemoto track from Xenon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfi4A_t7Mek

Ryu Umemoto passed away a couple years back, but his music lives on! Enjoy, friends!

Shit! I just wrote out a huge reply for all of the music posted here so far, then lost it by accident while trying to figure out how the youtube tags worked here.

The gist of it: Shadow Hearts is awesome but I like Koudelka more; I dig Oquonie's music; Battle Garegga and Chelnov are long-time favorites.

Since we've already mentioned one of Yagawa's shmups here, here's the soundtrack to my personal favorite game of his: Summer Carnival '92 Recca. Probably the most cynical beats you're going to find on the Famicom. It's great.

Sorry about tags difficulty! I just add them as I need them! If you hover over the button in the editor you can see how they are formed. The mistake most people will make is just grabbing the url rather then getting the shortened version from the share section.

I saw this posted on offworld today. I was never super into this soundtrack but there are a few good tracks in here! Like the Frigate!

Haha, no problem whatsoever. I've just seen forums use the youtube tags in three different ways now, with some requiring the whole URL, some requiring only the 'video code' at the end of the URL, and I guess now youtu.be as well.

I've never actually played Goldeneye, but some of these tracks are pretty sweet. Love those synth guitars.

And of course, here's a classic.

And one that totally caught me by surprise. Thought this was going to be a cheap and trashy game, but the soundtrack kicks ass. Turn the bass way up on this one!

I love RangerX!!!

And I hadn't listened to this biohazard battle OST for a while!! I'm not a huge fan of the game, but I should pull it out for this.

Jewel master is a pretty chill one

@Adamazing i do that too like when i'm playing sega(or anything where the menu make a sound) I'll add rhythm to the track i'm listening to with the menu beep sounds! Up until now I thought it was kinda wierd to do that, but now i see someone else does it too.

It's not weird! It just means we're talented and have a creative spark! We can make something out of nothing! We can make anything a musical instrument!

Here's a pretty sweet collection of DOS game music recorded directly from a SB16. Been way into the ol' OPL sounds quite a bit lately.

Here's a playlist I slapped together of more old FM-ish game music.

I knew about Go Straight/Good Life, but not the rest of these! Interesting. Some of it is a stretch to say it was an influence vs a coincidence, but still fun to think about, and nice to hear all this old house music in general.
