New Gunsport team

Postby [NG] brandon » Wed Sep 16, 2015 2:44 am

Hello!! We've got a new Gunsport team for y'all to have a fun time with (eventually, or at TGS or EGX or maybe indiecade if you are going to those places).

The Cambodia team are the oldest in the competition, a husband and wife team in their mid-40s. they don't use cybernetic augmentations or enhancements, just the more traditional armor and external supports. they've been playing the game for years, and this is their final hoorah.

Mechanically, the Keeper shoots a mortar that flies in an arc. If it hits the ball directly it is relatively low strength - but you can detonate the mortar with a 2nd button press, creating a larger explosion which propels the ball much further. You can lob a mortar into enemy territory, and detonate at a choice moment, but defense becomes a little more complicated.

The Striker, meanwhile, has a bow - she shoots in a downward arc unless you hold the button to charge, at which point the shot straightens as though a bow were being pulled back, also increasing the strength. the uncharged shot can be pretty tricky though, since it falls in a curious arc.

This whole team is about arcs and parabola! So hopefully you like those! Come test these friends out at some sort of event, yeahhhhhhhhhh??

Cambodia rules!
The mortar is really fun to use, and the striker is fun too!
The neon Neo Angkor Wat in the background of their stage is pretty cool to look at.

I like the more dull colors of the UWSD team's outfits (as well as the more conservative fashion). It forms a nice contrast to the vibrant colors of just about everything else, and implies some interesting stuff about their home country.

I see a curve on the firing angle for the Keeper, but no shot angle for the Striker. If you don't mind me asking, what are the mechanics on this team?

Of course! The UWSD team's keeper fires a cannon in an arc. the main benefit of it is it doesn't disappear when it hits the ball, it sticks around and can push the thing as long as it doesn't hit a wall or the floor.

the striker fires a quick, narrow laser that can hit straight on, or on the side of the laser beam like a paddle. the shot is quick, but he himself is slow. in fact, they both are, because they're heavily cybernetically modified in order to lift these specialized guns, which makes them heavy and very much affected by gravity.

Ha, yeah that tall guy was me.
I'm hooked. I'm glad these new teams were in the TGS build, they were fun to play.

Since keepers don't move the UWSD keeper's slower aim really stands out. His shot stays in play long after it's been fired. Playing as the Russian keeper is great, you have to be very deliberate with your aim and your shots.

The striker can compensate somewhat for the slow aim by physically moving into a good firing position. The striker's shot is quick which balances nicely with the keepers slow shot.

glad you liked them!
we do need to do a fair bit of tuning to make them feel even - right now oakland is very overpowered, so we're discussing what to do about that (it's my fault for the combo of weapons I chose there). It's fun to play, but... not for the other team :P
